AuthorHouse’s Daniel Korn is the self-published author of Dawn’s Gray Steel: A Novel about Shiloh and Tennessee Thunder. Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich gave the former a five-star Amazon review! We’ll be chatting with Daniel much more over the next few weeks, but this time he talked with Author’s Digest about his background.
I’ve been a teacher for twenty-one years, the last twelve teaching high school-level U.S. history. I’ve also taught a dedicated American Civil War course for eleven years, and advanced placement U.S. history for nine years. I’m the department chair (11 teachers) for my school’s social studies department. I’m married to Cheri, my wife of 29 years, and we have two children (Gena Marie and Michael). I hold both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Education and History from the State University of New York-Brockport.
I’ve developed the curriculum for all my classes, as well as another course on the American Revolution, which I wrote for another teacher. My Civil War course curriculum is currently our school system’s standard course curriculum, as it was adopted district-wide by the other teachers who teach the course. I’ve received a number of teaching awards, including two National Society of High School Scholars Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction awards, a Teacher of the Year award in my school district, and letters of commendation from both the U.S. and North Carolina House of Representatives for excellence in education.
I’m both a Revolutionary War and Civil War reenactor, and have traveled all over the Southeast doing reenactments. As a Revolutionary War reenactor, I’m a member of the Royal North Carolina Regiment (British Army) and have been an infantryman and a rammer/ sponger on our artillery crew. Our group owns two cannon, which my son Mike and I operate together. As a Civil War reenactor, I portray both a Confederate (13th NC Co. B) and Union (136th NYSV) infantryman. I’m one of the characters (George Washington) in the Summo Publishing’s video spoof of the Founding Fathers It’s Too Late To Apologize: A Declaration, which has been viewed over eight MILLION times. I’ve also appeared on television and in various movies as a reenactor.
I write a daily Facebook blog for the Society of Civil War Enthusiasts entitled “Today in the Civil War.” It tells you what happened that day in the Civil War for all four years, complete with video clips and pictures. It averages 7-9 thousand visits per week. I edit and write for a Civil War newsletter, The 13th North Carolina Co. B Brandenburg Rifles. I’ve written two books: Dawn’s Gray Steel and Tennessee Thunder. Both are Civil War historical fiction, and deal with the war and its characters in Tennessee.
We’ll talk more with Daniel Korn next week. His books are available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and the AuthorHouse Bookstore.
