Today, we present the conclusion of our interview with H. M. (“Marty”) Howington, the self-published author of The Redhead. The book was the da Vinci Eye winner at the 2018 Eric Hoffer Book Awards, and we’re pleased that Harold could take a moment to chat with us.
You can read the first part of the interview here.
The Redhead is about a young British girl who turned out to be more than what Charlie McQuillen [the protagonist] was expecting. She comes to his office needing help, only to be scared away by a couple of goons.
Charlie thinks he will never see her again, but this isn’t the case. She takes him through a lot of excitement and danger, which he almost doesn’t survive. Along the way he meets many savory characters (some harmless and others not so much).
What inspired you to write the book? How long did it take you to finish it?
I got the idea from a book about World War II. It talked about the way some enemy prisoners were treated and how it was covered up, and I thought this would make a good story for a fictional novel. I can’t say how long it took me to write, but it wasn’t long–maybe 6-8 months. I did a lot of research about the time period of the story.
Is there one message you’d like to convey to readers about The Redhead?
It’s a great story with lot of twists and turns. You don’t have to worry about bad language because there really isn’t any. The book won three Eric Hoffer awards, as well as “best mystery” from the Pacific Book Review.
What was your favorite part of self-publishing?
My favorite part was being able to control how my story was published, as well as keeping all the rights to my book.
Do you have any advice for the aspiring authors out there?
If you have a story and you believe in it, you should go for it. It wouldn’t hurt to have a few people read it and give you an honest opinion about your story. In the end, it comes down to you and how far you’re willing to go with it.
What are you working on next?
I’ve started another Charlie McQuillen story and some other projects, including a stage play.
Are there any events or promotions planned for The Redhead?
I’m currently working on some marketing ideas.
Best of luck with your next book, Marty, and thanks for taking the time to talk with us! Readers, H. M. Howington’s award-winning novel The Redhead is available at Amazon and the AuthorHouse Bookstore.
