We hope everyone had a great weekend! Today we present the third part of our discussion with Susanne Bacon, self-published author of the Wycliff series of novels (including the latest, Clean Cuts).
Quite simply a cliffhanger at the end of my last Wycliff novel, Telling Truths. In that novel, the above mentioned chef falls victim to a shooting, but it is not clear what becomes of him. Readers asked me, and I had to come up with an answer to that, didn’t I?
How long did it take you to finish the book?
From research, plotting, and writing through to publishing it took me a bit over a year to finish Clean Cuts. My protagonist was misbehaving for a while, and I needed to let him find his way out of that rut and back in line with my plot again. That took quite some time (it happens!) I never dictate how my characters behave in specific situations–as long as they end up where I want them to be.
What’s the one message you’d like to convey to readers through your book?
Sometimes your life changes abruptly, sometimes you make a life-changing decision. These “clean cuts” never affect just one person, but his or her entire network. Be mindful!
What was your favorite part of the self-publishing experience?
I wouldn’t be a writer if I didn’t say “the writing.” Self-publishing means that there are no deadlines; you can take all the time you need and want. Publishing with AuthorHouse also means you get a perfect product. I’m torn about the most thrilling moment, though. Is it when the cover layout was emailed to me? That’s thrilling, exhilarating, and scary at the same time because that’s when I know another book is about to become “alive.” Or is it when I receive the first printed copy in the mail, and I can move on to writing the next novel?
We’ll present the conclusion of our interview with Susanne Bacon next week. Her Wycliff series is available in the AuthorHouse Bookstore, and we can’t recommend them enough!
